As we become older, we often find ourselves wishing for skin as supple as a baby. Many of us may not know that the secret to their dewy and oh-so-soft skin is due to the fact that the growth of a baby's skin cells exceeds its degradation. However, as we age the balance shifts ' our skin cells no longer work as fast to regenerate. In fact our cells degenerate at a faster pace than they are renewed. Although science proves that our genetic make up determines how well we age, but in the modern context it is also important to realize that external factors play a vital role in determining how fast and how well our skin looks in the process.

In understanding how the skin works, we need to understand that skin is not one dimensional or a flat surface as it seems to the naked eye. The human skin is comprised of several layers. Each of the skin layers has a designated function but works in synergy with each other to deliver optimal skin conditions.

Skin is composed of two cell layers ' the epidermis and the dermis. The function of the outer epidermis is to provide a barrier against water loss and external chemical injury. The underlying dermis contains the major cell types: keratinocyl and fibroblasts. This second layer is also rich in extra cellular matrix (ECM) that is essential for providing strength and elasticity for the skin.

When we grow older or become exposed to unnecessary aggressions, the internal balance of our skin is disturbed and over a period of time becomes altered. The structure of the dermis shifts, causing undesirable lines on our complexion. Collagen production in the dermis also slows down during this stage causing skin to lose firmness, elasticity and moisture.
